We Are Animals (2019)
A collaboration with the youth program at The Sixth Street Community Center (SSCC) on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. This project began with facilitating children in developing new strategies of pursuing climate justice. Engaging with the history of children’s strikes of the past 200 years, children reflected on the shortcomings of sanctioned forms of demonstration, and experimented with ideas that might point beyond the current paradigm. Working together, the group devised a performative action, entitled “We are Animals” which was staged at Tishman Hall at the “Who Owns the World” symposium at the New School, on November 8, 2019. A component of the performance was the video, Pollution and Their Cronies, found below, written and directed by Camnitzer, SSCC staff, and the children, and shot and edited by Justin Denis.
