...A Simple but Wonderful Device

For the project, …En enkel men underbar anordning (…A Simple but Wonderful Device), 2019, a group of children from Lövgärdesskolan, a middle school in Angered, Sweden. With Camnitzer as facilitator, the children engaged with notions of spatiality and subjectivity, experimenting with visualization techniques developed by Abbott Thayer in the late 1800’s to study animal coloration. Using stencils and collage techniques, children explored their ability to become space – destabilizing the boundary-making practices of adults. The children grappled with the contradictory interplay between agency and social structure. The children created a large scale collage book with their findings. The book was first presented at Göteborgs Konsthall, before being permanently installed at Lövgärdesskolan, Angered, Sweden. Photos: Hendrik Zeitler
