I hand out cartoon thought bubbles and ask them to dictate the thoughts to me so that I can write them on the thought bubbles for them. The children are not interested in this. I had failed to recognize that I was privileging written language over other forms of communication. Luckily the children were on to me, and instead just took the bubbles and started drawing the thoughts instead. This quickly evolved into the children draw- ing their own thoughts. Nora was thinking of a giant car. She said the thought originated in her stomach. First we do a round in which each child pushes a small green button describing what they are triggering. Second, we do a round with a “giant button”, a circle about 40cm in diameter drawn on a piece of white cardboard. The children interact with the paper with the large circle as if it demands great force to push it down. They begin jumping on it. In both variations a narrative of events begins to unfold. Each child is given a small bar of soap. I describe my experience of observing soap disappearing when washing my hands. Where does the form go? Where does the soap flee to? Francis Ponge described soap as “giving up the ghost,” in contact with our hands and water. Together with the children, we wash our hands and discuss disappearance as the soap dissolves. The children eventually view the soapy water as a kind of veil behind which they can hide their hands. Curated by Tenthaus—a diverse group of artists and art workers from a variety of cultural backgrounds—the 12th edition includes collaborations with over 90 artists, collectives, and institutions from Norway and around the world and features a constellation of projects ranging from commissioned artworks to a dynamic and community-oriented live programme of discursive and spontaneous events, all of which unfold in the Galleri F 15 exhibition space, on the grounds of the gallery on the island of Jeløy, and across the city of Moss. As this is the first time the biennale is curated by an art collective, Tenthaus wanted to reflect this in an approach that is less about a unified curatorial standpoint, but instead more of a reflection of the complex polyphony of voices that make up collective work. There is no specific overarching theme, other than a desire to gather and share experiences.
